Frequently Asked Questions about South Africa

South Africa is a year-round destination. For wildlife viewing, visit during dry winter months (May-September). For beach holidays, summer (November-February) is ideal. Cape Town is best in summer, while the Garden Route is beautiful year-round.

Many nationalities receive visa-free entry for stays up to 90 days, including USA, UK, EU, and most Commonwealth citizens. Your passport must be valid for 30 days beyond departure and have at least 2 blank pages. If traveling with children, bring unabridged birth certificates.

The South African Rand (ZAR) is the official currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas. ATMs are plentiful. US Dollars and Euros can be exchanged at banks and bureaux de change. Tipping is customary (10-15% in restaurants).

South Africa is generally safe for tourists who take sensible precautions. Stay in well-populated areas, avoid displaying valuables, use registered tour operators, and don't walk alone at night. Tourist areas have good security. Always lock car doors and keep windows closed in cities.

No vaccinations are mandatory unless arriving from yellow fever areas. Malaria risk exists in Kruger National Park and northern KwaZulu-Natal (low risk in winter). Consult your doctor about prophylaxis. South Africa has excellent medical facilities in major cities.

Pack layers as weather varies by region and season. Bring warm clothes for winter game drives, lightweight clothing for summer, rain jacket for coastal areas, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen SPF 30+, sunglasses), and smart-casual outfits for cities and wine estates.
